MORE than 2,000 former street children, orphans and vulnerable children have benefited from the Development Aid from People to People’s (DAPP) education support programme.
DAPP’s Children’s Town project complements Government efforts in providing basic education to former street children and other vulnerable and orphaned children through a two career pathway that integrates academic and vocational education.
The 2016 DAPP year report indicates that the project offers basic education from pre-school to grade nine for both former street children and vulnerable children from the community.
The report said the aim of the project was to ensure that children had the opportunity to learn and develop in a holistic and comprehensive way.
“More than 2, 000 former street children and vulnerable from major towns in Zambia and the surrounding communities have benefited from Children’s Town programmes from 1990 to date. The project has been run through partnerships and proceeds mainly from DAPP clothes sales since 1990 and the Child Welfare Fund since 2009,” the report said.
The Project had been working closely with the Ministry of General Education, Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, and the Ministries of Gender.
The report said the project runs a pre -school which had adopted child friendly teaching methods using the Government approved curriculum and an addition teaching method called Pre-schools of the Future (POF).
In the primary education, the school was following the current Government approved curriculum and the teaching methodology from Grades one to four using local languages as medium of instruction and special attention was given to grade one pupils whose class was managed by two teachers.
