Fight for medals, Badminton boss urges Zambian players

BADMINTON Zambia President Kamutuwa Chirwa has challenged Zambian players taking part in the ongoing 2017 Zambia Junior Open tournament to give their all and fight for medals.
The tournament taking place at the National Sports Development Centre (Nasdec) has participants from five foreign countries, namely; Algeria, Uganda, Egypt, Mauritius and Mozambique.
“I am just asking the Zambian players to put up a good show because the event is being played on home soil and they have the fans support,” he said.
In the preliminary round, Bwalya Chanda started his campaign with a 2-1 win over Bright Kunda in which he came from behind to win with scores of 20-22, 21-15, 21-13.
In other matches James Miyambo defeated Jobline Kalandanya 2-1 while Gillan Katunasa defeated Badara Nchimunya Mudenda in straight sets.
Nathan Chishimba also went through to the next stage after he outplayed Peter Zulu with a 2-1 scoreline while Robert Bwalya also took a 2-1 win off Moses Banda to progress to the next stage.
Ashton Kafunda managed to fend off stiff competition from Owen Malela whom he defeated 2-1 and Joshua Banda defeated Abraham Likala 2-0 with Martin Zulu losing 2-0 to Gilbert Mwiya.
By press time the girls’ events was yet to start.
