ZAMBIAN refereeing ace Janny Sikazwe has been appointed as an official for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology which will be premiering at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament in Morocco.
Sikazwe will be among the seven officials picked for the VAR whose trial in football continues with the CHAN being the latest.
VAR is a system used by match officials to review a decision using video technology and was first used at the 2017 South Korea FIFA Under 20 World Cup with Zambia seeing a Patson Daka goal cancelled out for offside in a game against Costa Rica.
According to a list released by CAF, Sikazwe, the Zambian referee-of-the-year, has been appointed alongside Mehdi Charef (Algeria), Ghead Grisha (Egypt), Bakary Gassama (Gambia), Malang Diedhiou (Senegal), Jerson Emiliano (Angola) and Bange Marwa of Kenya.
Sikazwe said in an interview yesterday that using the VAR will be a good opportunity to get experience with the new technology that is about to take root in football.
The Kapiri Mposhi referee added he had knowledge of the VAR after it was used at the under-20 World Cup and has attended courses in Italy and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s second city of Abu Dhabi.
“I am looking forward to the tournament, it will be good for me to get the experience. The appointment is a positive thing,” Sikazwe said.
Meanwhile Zesco United defender Fackson Kapumbu is competing for a place in the CAF best XI.
CAF has for the first time introduced the Africa’s finest XI and have given the opportunity the general public to vote.
Kapumbu will be competing for the left back position with Tunisian Ali Maaloul from Al Ahly.
The voting commenced on December 24 this year and closes on January 2 next year and will be done for specialised positions.
