STATE HOUSE has said President Edgar Lungu is not in receipt of the alleged resignation letter from Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba.
According to a posting on Mr Kalaba’s Facebook page, on which he relates to the public (unless hacked), Mr Kalaba said yesterday that he had quit his ministerial position after more than four years.
“I have just dropped my resignation letter as Foreign Affairs Minister with President Edgar Lungu-a position I have cherished and held for over four years. I have taken my decision to resign as Foreign Affairs Minister with a heavy heart but quite succinctly with a clear and resolved mind,” Mr Kalaba said.
Mr Kalaba, who is also Patriotic Front (PF) Bahati Member of Parliament (MP), said he elected to serve as an ordinary MP, choosing the country over his individual comfort.
He could, however, not be reached for a verbal comment by Press time.
However, special assistant to the president for press and public relations Amos Chanda said the Head of State was not in receipt of any resignation letter from Mr Kalaba.
“The President has not received any letter from Mr Kalaba, neither has the President’s senior private secretary nor indeed myself,” Mr Chanda said.
In a separate interview, PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri said the party had not received any correspondence to the effect that Mr Kalaba had quit.
Ms Phiri said she was only aware of Mr Kalaba’s blog that he had quit Cabinet, but was still an MP.
Earlier yesterday, Luapula Province PF youths challenged Mr Kalaba to quit, describing him as ‘Judas Iscariot’ following his recent scathing attacks against Government on his Facebook wall.
Bahati Constituency is in Luapula Province.
Luapula Province PF youth chairperson Jacob Chilufya said Mr Kalaba should resign and face the ruling party in a parliamentary by–election.
