THE American International School (AIS) Torpedoes at the weekend proved unstoppable when they scooped the Zambia Amateur Swimming Union (ZASU) fourth league gala held at the new Simba Seals Swimming pool in Ndola.
It was also the final selection of the Zambian team for the African Swimming Confederation (CANA) Zone Three and Four Swimming Championships that will be hosted by the Uganda Swimming Federation in Kampala from April 24 to 28.
The two-day swimming gala that closed the 2013/2014 ZASU season, saw the Lusaka based AIS Torpedoes reign supreme, emerging overall winners after amassing 1845 points to close the campaign on a high.
Having earlier won the third league gala held at Baobab School in Lusaka with 1942 points, the Torpedoes are firmly in contention to be crowned league winners at the ZASU award presentation ceremony billed for next month.
Hosts Simba Seals secured second spot with 1301 points while Kapenta of Lusaka was third after collecting 1110 points.
Fourth position went to Trident Tigers of Solwezi who accumulated 1028 points while Lusaka Dolphins and the Barracudas were fifth and sixth after managing 966 and 531 points respectively.
Lechwe Swimming Club of Kitwe accumulated 449 points as Mazabuka based club Musikili finished bottom with 52 points while Mufulira Amateur club failed to make the trip to Ndola for the final Gala that attracted over 250 swimmers in various categories.
ZASU secretary Nicola Sharpe-Phiri described the gala as a success, saying that it was one of the biggest held in recent years.
Phiri said swimmers had showcased their skills and that ZASU would soon announce the names of outstanding swimmers to represent the country in Uganda.
“The Gala was a huge success with a big number of swimmers and we would like to thank Simba Seals for staging such a huge event,” she said.
ZASU will be holding the national age group swimming competition at the International School of Lusaka on March 28 and 29.
