By JULIUS PHIRI –
EASTERN Province has recorded a second death from cholera from the time the disease broke out on December 28, 2017.
Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo said during the cholera update meeting in Chipata yesterday that one more person died on Saturday in Katete District.
Mr Kasolo said the woman was admitted to a health facility for gynaecological problems, stating that after her death, a post-mortem was conducted and both the rapid test and samples tested positive for cholera.
He said confirmed cholera cases in the province had increased to 24 after another case was recorded in Lundazi District.
Mr Kasolo said this brought the total number of confirmed cholera cases in Lundazi District to 18.
He said two members of the same family were in quarantine in Ukwimi A, awaiting results in Petauke District.
Mr Kasolo said all the victims were from Lusaka’s John Laing Township.
The permanent secretary said the province currently had five people in quarantine with one confirmed case in Lundazi and two suspected cases in Lundazi and Petauke.
He said 99 per cent of all the confirmed cholera cases in the province had been imported from other cholera-affected areas.
Mr Kasolo said in view of this, the province needed to intensify screening at all entry points to the province to ensure the disease did not spread.
