ABOUT 191 schools in Lusaka have not opened for the 2018 school academic calendar after failing to meet the set hygiene standards of the Ministry of Health following the cholera epidemic.
Ministry of General Education spokesperson Nondo Chilonga said health inspectors were going round schools to ensure that proper hygiene standards were met before pupils were allowed to report for lessons in a bid to contain the epidemic.
Ms Chilonga said in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, officers from the directorate of standards and curriculum had been tasked to inspect, monitor and evaluate schools to ensure that they adhered to high hygiene standards.
“Schools are being inspected and given an opportunity to address the issues afterwards they are re-inspected and if they pass they are allowed to open, however schools in epicentres are not allowed to open even if they meet the requirements,” Ms Chilonga said.
She said the schools were in various categories namely Government, grant aided, private and community schools and that most of the schools that had not opened were private and community.
Ms Chilonga said Lusaka District had been divided into different zones and a number of schools in different zones and areas both in epicentres and otherwise were still closed.
She said some of the schools in the epicentres had met the required hygiene standards to reopen, but because they were located in the affected areas, they would not open until the Ministry of Health
cleared them.
Ms Chilonga said after passing the inspections, nine primary and three secondary schools had been opened while two primary and three secondary schools had been closed for failing the inspections in
Chilanga and in Chongwe districts.
