By MILDRED KATONGO –
THE ministry of General Education has closed about 11 schools on the Copperbelt due to lack of good sanitation facilities.
Copperbelt provincial education officer Felix Ngoma said the 11 schools were from Kitwe, Ndola, Mufulira, Luanshya and Kalulushi districts.
Mr Ngoma said these schools did not meet the health standards and had issues with sanitation facilities.
He said the schools which were closed in Kalulushi were Kalulushi Secondary, Chibuluma Primary and Sitwe Primary. In Kuanshya they are Chibansa Primary, Kamalanda and Rivercross Primary schools.
Others are Kamitondo Primary and Lima Secondary school in Kitwe. In Mufuluria, Kalukanya and Mukuba Primary schools were closed while in Ndola Chifubu A primary was also closed.
Mr Ngoma said the health inspectors in the company of officials from the Education ministry have continued to inspect schools and ensure that those not meeting the standards were closed.
“As of January 31, about 11 schools have been closed on the Copperbelt in five districts due to lack of good sanitation facilities,” he said.
Since the outbreak of cholera the ministry of education directed public health inspectors to conduct inspections and ensure that schools that did not meet the standards should not open or should be closed to prevent the further spread of cholera.
