POLICE in Chipata have arrested a 33-year-old man for the alleged double murder of his wife and son.
Godfrey Chomba had been on the run since January 28 when he is alleged to have killed his wife, Isabel Mbewe, aged 17 and his two-year-old son, Isaac Mbewe, using a stick.
Zambia Police Service public relations officer Esther Katongo said Chomba was arrested on Sunday night in Chongwe district where he is said to have been hiding.
Police say Chomba is alleged to have killed his wife and son in an incident that  happened on January 28, 2018 at about 06:00 hours near Masaiti Farm in Katete District.
In a statement, read that on the day the murders happened, the couple was coming from Masaiti Farm where they were engaged in some piece work and, on the way, Chomba accused his wife of having an extra-marital affair with a friend of his.
In the ensuing fight, Isabel is said to have sustained head injuries, bruises on the back and a cut on her right hand while the toddler sustained a fractured skull which forced the eye to come out of the socket.
“The suspect who was on the run was apprehended by police officers on Sunday at about 22:00 hours from Shansongo village, Chief Nkomeshya of Chongwe District where he was hiding,” Ms Katongo said.
Chomba has been charged with two counts of murder which is contrary to Section 200 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia and will appear in court soon.
