Lumwana rescues ‘thirsty’ Chavuma residents

BARRICK Lumwana Mining Company has come to the rescue of Chavuma District in North Western Province with a donation of a massive water pump at a cost of K50,000 to restore water, after a three-week water crisis.
Chavuma has had no piped water for three weeks due to a break down of one of the pumps and suction network on the Zambezi River, thereby triggering a water crisis in the district.
Speaking during the hand over of the pump to North Western Water and Sewerage Company (NWWSCO) at Lumwana in Kalumbila district on Friday afternoon, Barrick Lumwana Mine general manager, Sam Ash said the mining firm was committed to making positive difference in the communities it operates from and beyond.
He said the recent shortage of water in Chavuma for three weeks, presented a risk of illnesses and deadly diseases and explained that access to clean water was one of the most crucial and quickest ways to lift a community out of poverty as reduces illnesses, allows girls to go to school and leads to better agriculture and access to food.
Mr Ash said through Lumwana Property Development Company General Manager Dixon Tembo at handover on Friday that Barrick was committed to making a positive difference in the communities in which it operates.
He said Barrick would strive to gain the trust of all stakeholders that include Government, in the sustainable development of mineral resources.
And Kalumbila district administration has observed that safe drinking water was important for normal functioning and disease-free human bodies.
Speaking on behalf of Kalumbila district commissioner Robinson Kalota, district director of health Mando Phiri said lives of people in Chavuma were exposed to great danger by not accessing quality water during the period pumps were malfunctional.
Lumwana Mine sustainability manager Christopher Mukala said when Barrick Lumwana received the request from NWWSCO, the mining company responded positively in order to provide the pump to alleviate the suffering of the people.– Story courtesy of SUMA SYSTEMS
