THE United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has said that Zambia is among the top countries leading in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNDP representative Mandisa Mashalongo said Zambia was doing well regarding the implementation of the SDGs.
She said this yesterday at the official opening of the convening of the faith based organisations in Lusaka.
Ms Masholongo said Zambia had shown seriousness in implementing the SDGs as could be seen that the goals were in alignment with the Seventh National Development Plan (SNDP).
“In 2015, Zambia was among the 153 countries that signed to the attainment of the SDGs and it is among the top countries showing leadership of its implementation,” she said.
Ms Masholongo said it was important that United Nations member countries committed themselves to improving education, health and transparency.
She said Zambia’s SNDP reflected the desired outcomes of the SDGs and was a good foundation for the country to attain the universal education and health among other goals.
Ms Masholongo said she was happy that the implementation of the SDGs was driven by Government policy through the development plans.
She urged the faith-based organisations to play an important role to ensure that the SDGs were meant.
Faith based organisations had a unique role to play in the development of any nation and so they needed to lead in advocating the SDGs.
