THE Government has signed a financing agreement with UKaid and other cooperating partners to help scale-up provision of good nutrition in 30 districts with high stunting levels over a seven-year period.
The agreement, which would help Government mount a multi-sectoral response to stunting in communities followed successful implementation of a pilot phase which was executed in 14 districts between 2013 and 2017.
Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya who signed on behalf Agriculture, Community Development and General Education ministries, said the facility would help Zambia reduce stunting, strengthen cognitive development, cut mortality rate and combat non-communicable diseases, among other benefits.
“This will ensure that we broaden nutrition in our country. We know that for us to develop as a nation, we must first speak to the health of our people,” Dr Chilufya said.
He said this in Lusaka yesterday when he signed the agreement on the sidelines of a three-day Nutritional Food and Nutrition Summit, which is being held under the theme; ‘investing in food and nutrition for accelerated national development-walk the talk for nutrition’.
Dr Chilufya said the resources would be met with Government funding, assuring donors of good corporate governance and accountability in applying the funds.
