PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has pardoned 2,182 inmates from correctional facilities countrywide as the country joins the rest of the continent to commemorate Africa Freedom Day which falls today.
Despite much lobbying from the media fraternity on his behalf, incarcerated journalist Derick Sinjela was not among those who left jail, with the Government explaining that he had not served the required minimum period to be considered for a pardon.
This year’s celebration will be held under the theme, ‘The year of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa’.
Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo who announced this at a Press briefing in Lusaka yesterday said President Lungu was looking for stakeholders to come on board and provide start-up kits for pardoned inmates to enable them to be reintegrated into the society.
