600 bailed by virus

Nearly 600 accused persons have been granted bail by the Judiciary in a bid to avoid congesting the country’s correctional facilities amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Judiciary’s intervention for a total of 587 accused persons has been implemented by the magistrate courts countrywide.
Those granted bail include 97 (Central Province), 96 (Copperbelt), 91(Luapula), 69 (Lusaka).
Others were 64 (Eastern), 55 (Western), 45 (Southern), 41 (North-Western), 21 (Northern) and eight in Muchinga.
Charles Kafunda, chief registrar and director of court operations at Judiciary, Charles Kafunda said in response to a Press query that those released faced various bailable offences such as theft, house breaking, and assault, among others.
