SOME small-scale farmers are reportedly selling maize to ‘briefcase buyers’ at as low as K50 and K70 for a 50 kilogramme bag while others have sold their entire fields even before harvest.
The prices are markedly lower than last year’s Food Reserve Agency (FRA) offer of K110 per 50kg bag, which was taken by many as the floor price.
This Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) says it is dismayed that some farmers are giving up their maize for a price which translates into needing to sell 10 bags of the grain to raise just enough money to pay for a 50 kg bag of fertiliser, now hovering around K500.
