Sports council helps cricketers

THE Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) has given the Zambia Cricket Union (ZCU) KR25,000 for the 2013 International Cricket Council (ICC) Africa U-19 Cricket World Cup qualifiers (CWC) Division1 tournament to be held in Kampala from the May 24-30.
ZCU president Reuben Chama said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the contribution from the SCZ had made it possible for the team to fly out tomorrow morning having already received tickets from the ICC.
Chama paid tribute to the SCZ, saying the money will help dress the national team and to meet other logistics that the ZCU had difficulties with and that the team was well prepared for the tournament.
Zambia is in Pool A along with Namibia, Tanzania and Uganda, while Pool B has hosts Kenya, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Botswana.
Zambia kicks off her campaign with a match against Uganda on May 25 before taking on Namibia the following day.
The Brian Yambayamba-coached side will then play Tanzania on May 28 ahead of the play-off matches on May 29.
The team is made up of captain, Chettan Reddy, assistant captain James Zimba, Kanswe Omala, Chanda Mumba, Mwilla Bwanga, Fazal Patel, Tristen Dewet, Sebastian Moronell, Azhar Haveliwala, Naeem Patel, Abiasi Mwanza, Denis Musonda, Suhail Baig and Gibson Kandela, while Jonathan Chisembele and Peter Njiko are the two reserves.
Meanwhile, Uniturtle were over the weekend crowned Midlands Cricket Association ‘A’ League Twenty20 championship winners after defeating City A by five wickets in an exciting final watched by Southern Africa region cricket officials.
City A, parading internationals in Imran Muhammed, Abid Patel and Safraz Soparia, won the toss and opted to bat first, made 139 runs for eight wickets, saw the dangerous Zaki Patel caught on the boundary by Ishmael Mbatata after he had earlier hit three towering sixes.
Uniturtle bowlers; James Zimba, Tapson Nyirongo and Gladson Kandela, bowled with discipline to keep City A in check. Batting second, Uniturtle reached their victory target in 19.1 overs to win by five wickets with Isaac Mwaba hitting an unbeaten 54 runs with the winning run being a six.
The final was graced by the presence of the ICC/ACA Regional Development manager, Cassim Suliman and Goodlove Poswa both from South Africa, the ZCU executive led by Chama and the MCA executive were in attendance.
Suliman thanked ZCU and MCA executives for organising the T20 tournament and encouraged the executives to support the under-19 national cricket team which is scheduled to compete in the ICC under-19 CWCQ in Kampala, Uganda.
Chama thanked all the teams participating in the Midlands Cricket Association league for the interest they have shown for the game of cricket and encouraged them to continue playing.
Earlier, in the ‘B’ league final, Tangy XI Cricket Team which is a new team in Midlands Cricket Association (MCA) league this year, played Royals in the final which saw Royal Cricket Team winning the ‘B’ league T20 tournament for 2013.
