AN 18-YEAR-OLD girl of Ndola’s Chifubu Township has died from intoxication after taking excessive alcohol with her friend, her uncle Alick Chishimba has said.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Joyce Kasosa and Ndola Central Hospital (NCH) public relations officer Sheona Chalimbana confirmed the death and identified the deceased as Sylvia Chanda.
Mr Chishimba said his niece went out in the company of her friend to Kawama Township but he was shocked a few hours later to see her come back in a stupor.
Mr Chishimba said the family tried to resuscitate the young girl before rushing her to Ndola Central Hospital (NCH) where medical staff tried to neutralise the alcohol content in her body.
However, that could not work as she kept on vomiting before she was declared dead at the hospital.
Mr Chishimba said following the death of his niece, he decided to report the matter to Chifubu Police Station.
“My niece was okay but it was only after going out with her friend that she came back in a drunken state and could not even talk nor walk,” Mr Chishimba said.
“Her friend told me that they were drinking some dry spirits and in the process she became too drunk.”
Ms Chalimbana said Chanda was taken to the hospital on Wednesday and treated for organic poisoning after suspected excessive consumption of alcohol.
“Yes I can confirm that Ms Chanda was admitted to NCH and died of suspected organic poisoning, but the post-mortem will be able to determine the cause of her death,” she said.
Ms Kasosa said Chanda was suspected to have taken strong spirits in Kawama between 18:00 hours and 23:00 hours.
