GOVERNMENT says opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema should be cited for contempt of court
for commenting on a matter before the courts.
Chief Government spokesperson, Joseph Katema said it was regrettable
that Mr Hichilema had continued to issue statements insinuating that
Malawian High Court Judge, Lovemore Chikopa was in the country when in
actual fact he was not.
Mr Justice Chikopa was appointed by President Michael Sata to chair
the Tribunal constituted against retired Supreme Court Judge Philip
Musonda and two High Court judges Charles Kajimanga and Nigel Mutuna
but the trio has challenged the matter in the courts of law.
Dr Katema said this in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday in
reaction to Mr Hichilema’s statement in the Daily Nation newspaper
yesterday, quoting him as saying that Judge Chikopa was still in the
country.
Dr Katema, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, has
since challenged Mr Hichilema to have his facts right before issuing
statements which were misleading and misguided.
“Contrary to Mr Hichilema’s  allegations, as reported in today’s
(yesterday) Daily Nation, Judge Chikopa is back in his home country
Malawi as the Tribunal he is supposed to chair is still a subject of
legal contentions in the courts of law,” Dr Katema said.
Dr Katema said instead of calling for the arrest of Mr Justice
Chikopa, it was Mr Hichilema who should be cited for contempt by
commenting on a matter that he knew was before the courts.
He said Government was a firm believer in the independence of the
Judiciary and as such would not allow the likes of Mr Hichilema to
interfere with its operations as it was an important organ of the
State for political expedience.
Dr Katema advised political parties to choose leaders with experience
in leadership at the grassroot level to avoid embarrassing themselves.
“Let me also take this opportunity to give a friendly advice to
political groupings that, in choosing leaders for themselves, they
should go for people with experience in leadership at grassroot level
so as to avoid embarrassments such as this one,” he said.
He said the nation expected leaders like Mr Hichilema to talk about
national issues from a well-informed and researched position.
