THE Government will support organisations that are supplementing the
provision of quality education in the country, Livingstone District
Education Board Sectary (DEBS) Zeneliah Chola has said.
In a speech delivered on her behalf by Livingstone District education
standards officer Billy Milimo, Ms Chola said the Government stood
ready to work with entities that were promoting education in the
country.
She said it was encouraging to note that some organisations were
supplement Government efforts in the education sector by providing
transport to pupils who were covering long distances to go to school.
She was speaking in Livingstone on Tuesday afternoon when Tour
D’afrique, Africa Impact, Happy Africa Foundation as well as Zambezi
Waterfront and other partners donated 66 bicycles to selected rural
and urban schools in the Tourist Capital and Linda Community farm.
The bicycles are to be used as a mode of transport for pupils who
cover long distances to go to school as well as for Linda farm
workers.
“As Zambian Government, we are here to support and we would like to
thank you for this donation,” she said.
Ms Chola urged teachers to ensure that the bicycles were used for
their intended purpose and not otherwise.
Speaking at the same function, Africa Impact business manager Rachel
Greenwood said her entity had been working with the local communities
in Livingstone since 2006.
“We are dedicated to providing assistance in long term sustainable
development initiatives to a wide range of projects including
education, medical assistance, social welfare, sports coaching and
training for many local communities,” Ms Greenwood said.
Africa Impact project coordinator Memory Mundia said the donation of
bikes would make a huge impact on the children’s educational
performances and to the community of Linda Farm.
Ms Mundia said the donation was an investment to the future of pupils
and other recipients in the tourist capital.
