Kenyans lead scrabble tourney

KENYANS have dominated the opening 12 rounds of the Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (ECASA) KK90 Scrabble Championship that comes to an end today at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
Manase Otieno is topping the chart with 10 wins with a spread of 1242 with 13 rounds left to play and is followed by Allen Oyende with a spread of 1084.
Francis Wachira is in third position with 569 from his nine wins while Willy Mwangi had a spread of 816 from his nine wins.
Zambia’s Patrick Mpundu is in fifth position after he lost his three games to Oyende, Wachira and Otieno to leave him with a spread of 639 from nine wins.
Gambia’s only representative, Abba Hydara is on ninth position winning eight games with South African Duncan Keet in 18th place after recording seven wins while Tanzania’s Hamisi Quezi  won five games and placed 33 on the standings.
The winner of the competition will claim the $1000 top prize with the second, third and fourth placed finishers getting $800, $600, $400 and $200 respectively, while $600 is up for grabs for best female player.
Meanwhile, tournament director Jedaidah Chilufya expressed happiness with the way the tournament was being held.
