Africa Night goes annual
By NANCY HANDABILE -
SATURDAY evening was a proper feast for the senses as many Lusaka residents sampled the best of Africa.
Africa Night, which was held at Suwilanji Gardens in Kalundu area, was the first of its kind in Zambia.
Organisers Mwaka and Manase Phiri have, however , promised that the event will now be an annual affair.
The function is meant to showcase the best of Africa in all its forms and on Saturday, it did just that.
Seasoned Afro-centric musician Maureen Lupo Lilanda was on hand to provide entertainment at the event.
She sang her timeless classics like Mumba and jazzed up the night with her renditions of old jazz songs.
Maureen proved why she is called Mama Maureen by many in the industry; her performances are always flawless and choosing her as one of the main acts was a good decision by the organisers.
Cactus Agony revved up the guests with songs such as Bush Territory which got many skanking to his unique brand of reggae.
Maranda is a new artiste who gave the guests a sample of her talent.
Maranda is new on the music scene but there is definitely nothing amateurish about her performance.
Her soulful music and sultry vocals had everyone applauding and wondering where she has been hiding that voice.
All the artistes were accompanied by the jam session band which, no doubt, made life a little easier for the artistes.
Their accompaniment was always on point and did not subject guests to out of tune instrumentals that some bands play.
Nomakanjani Dance troupe danced in with their feverish energetic jaw dropping dances. The dance troupe were a marvel to watch as the jumped, shook, stomped and wriggled all in perfect rhythm.
After watching such a performance one has to eat something and food was plenty.
From Nigerian to Ghana, Zambia to Malawi African cuisines was abundant at the event.
The food was enough to go round and even for people to get seconds and even take away.
In terms of fashion, designer Xtina showcased her afrocentric clothes and Nchimunya bought her beads jewellery.
Nchimunyas bead designs ranged from key holders, waist beads, bracelets and bead plates.
Manase and Mwaka really did not hold back at ensuring that the guests had fun. And it goes without saying that it was a wonderful night that left many calling for the event to be organised again.
