LADY golfers have expressed happiness at the opportunity to host the 2014 Zambia Ladies Open tournament slated for March at the Ndola Golf Club under the South Africa Women PGA Sunshine Tour.
Zambia Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) president, Moono Mwila said in an interview yesterday that hosting such a prestigious tournament would greatly help improve the standards of the sport in the country.
Mwila said the ZLGU was happy to be given the honour to host such a tournament for the first time especially that South Africa has in the past hosted the tournament that attracted best golfers.
The event to be held at the Ndola Golf Club from March 28 to 30 will gobble K500, 000 that would go towards prizes, travel and accommodation expenses for the Sunshine officials for the pre-tournament meetings and inspection of the course and during the tournament.
“Hosting of this tournament has come at a right time when we will be celebrating 50 years of ladies golf. We know it’s a huge responsibility but we are optimistic that we shall put up a successful event,” Mwila said.
Mwila said in an effort to improve the standards of golf and expose local golfers, the ZLGU had lined a number of local and international tournaments this year.
And the ZLGU president described the 2013 season as successful as it saw the Zambian team win the Eastern and Central Africa Challenge Championships while scooping second place at the Kenya Open tournament.
Mwila said the 2014 season would be exciting as a number of ladies in the country had expressed interest in playing golf.
She appealed to the government and the cooperate world to offer support to the ZLGU for it to successfully stage the tournaments lined up for this year.
