CHAMPIONS Nkana yesterday won their first away match of the season after beating ‘blunt’ Red Arrows to maintain their unbeaten run after this exciting MTN-FAZ Premier Division League Week 14 match in Lusaka.
The victory also saw Nkana score their first away goals this season after enduring a difficult start to the 2014 campaign to put their title defence back on track.
But the story was different for Arrows as yesterday’s defeat was their fourth successive loss to remain stagnant on 14 points.
Nkana, who moved up to 20 points 10 behind leaders Power Dynamos but with four games in hand, got their lead in the 47th minute through midfielder Simon Bwalya who headed in Evans Kangwa’s cross.
Veteran defender Billy Mwanza doubled Nkana’s advantage in the 53rd minute, scoring from the spot after Arrows goalkeeper, Ken Muma brought down hard-working Shadreck Musonda inside the box.
Kabwe referee Wisdom Chewe did not hesitate to point to the spot and also flashed a yellow card at Muma, who dived the wrong way as Mwanza calmly converted the spot-kick to give his side a comfortable command of the match.
Kangwa, who won the Gotv man-of-the-match award, capped his superb performance with an 88th minute goal, finishing off a Bwalya rebound that hit the crossbar after Muma made contact to the ball.
Nkana had a great chance to increase the goal tally after Chewe awarded an indirect free-kick inside the box after Muma, instead of clearing a Whiteson Simwanza back pass, opted to catch the ball.
But the resultant indirect free-kick was wasted as the Arrows wall ably blocked the ball and the airmen nearly caught Nkana on a counter attack but Noel Phiri, who was disposed of the ball, recovered well to intercept the move and clear his lines.
Arrows had started the match on a lively fast note but wasted a good chance through Mundia Lubinda in the first minute, allowing Nkana to get back into the game. Both teams were tied 0-0 going into the break.
