Something’s really wrong with Suarez

Letters to the Editor -LogoURUGUAY’S Luis Suarez, a player whose ability is without question – as was demonstrated by his brilliant performance against England – has once again behaved as if several vital components in the brain area do not fully function.
Suarez was involved in another World Cup controversy as he appeared to bite Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during their Group D clash on Tuesday.
In the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Suarez was sent off in the quarter-finals against Ghana for handling the ball on the goal-line. He was sent off, but Uruguay won the game in a penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals.
Suarez was banned for seven matches by the Netherlands football federation in 2010 after biting PSV Eindhoven player Otman Bakkal in a league match when he played for Ajax.
After moving to Liverpool, he bit Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in 2013 and was banned for 10 games.
One would think Suarez had redeemed himself after the spectacular season he had at Liverpool last season.
But alas, the man is at it again. I couldn’t believe that Suarez not only bit an opponent, but this time he even had the audacity to flop around trying to draw a foul.
To add insult to injury, the so called referee left him without even a simple caution. One would wonder why they have all those extra cameras at the tournament if they can’t be used for double checking.
I seriously think Suarez has psychological problems. What kind of grown man expresses frustration by biting?
No professional sportsman should behave that way. That is not what the beautiful game is about. Suarez is not well and he should not be playing football. It is not safe for the other players.
Yes, Suarez is a talented player but his list of ugly offenses is nearly as long as his list of achievements. This is the same player who has been accused of head-butting a referee, cheating and using racial slurs or another player.
What sort of role model is Suarez for young people? I don’t care how many goals he has scored. Suarez is a bad example for millions of kids, a bad role model and an absolute disgrace to the game, his country and the spirit of sportsmanship!
It’s time for the football authorities to make an example of this disgraceful human being.
Should it take him biting someone’s nose or ear off before serious action is taken against him?
If the powers that be at FIFA do not suspend him for at least 25 games, including this World Cup, then they have absolutely no business running this organisation.
Suarez had finished his three-course meal. Let him leave the table, please.

Councillors are a good link

MUCH as councillors are many a time over looked by society because of the way they portray themselves, they are a very important body of Government because they are the eyes and ears for the Government on the ground. They are the only elective body that lives amongst the electorate and, therefore, have the opportunity to disseminate information regarding Government programmes to the electorate and also report to the executive of the cries of the electorate.
It is very important that councillors know that they are actually very important and that they are a bridge between the executive and the electorate since they live amongst them.
Their task, therefore, is not to only take development to their areas but to also inform the electorate why certain things are not being done by Government.Where information flows systematically, peace and unity prevail. However, where there is lack of it, gossip engulfs society, thereby creating unwarranted tension.

Police officers must lead by example

THE Police are the custodians of law and must, therefore be in the forefront to desist from and resist the temptation to accept bribes and other influences. So many times, many are forced to do wrong things because they are scared of their jobs.
One time I saw with my own eyes a Police traffic car full of cops making a huge u-turn in the middle of the road and picking up their colleague. But if it was another car, they could have pounced on it!
The laws that the British left with us are not up for head knowledge. They are supposed to be part of us.They are not for playing games. Let us not use them to harass innocent people because there are higher forces watching over us and what we are doing.

Let’s appreciate Zambian pastors

GENUINE Zambian pastors are simple and hardworking servants. Unfortunately, congregants do not appreciate this simplicity. They prefer the exaggeration of the quacks who have invaded ministry.
Despite working hard and faithfully dispensing duties, Zambian pastors remain poor and are the only professionals without proper conditions of service. Shame! The public fuss about pastors’ prosperity is a false picture created by the few who depend on Western support and those who pretend to be prosperous.
I sincerely respect the miracle workers outside this country, but I write to let Zambians know that their local pastors are theologically sound, incomparable on the continent. And how members view these pastors determines their faith.
This explains why Jesus did not do many miracles in places where people were too familiar with him and contemptuously identified him as just a carpenter’ son (Mark 6:1-6).
But on the other hand, Zambian pastors must understand the African context, hence revisit their theology and make its application contextually relevant.
They must admit that Africans believe in power and miracles. And for the sake of the sanctity of their calling, our pastors must avoid overindulgence in “civilian affairs” (businesses, politics, social life) which may risk their respect, integrity, and prayer life (2 Tim. 2:4).
Lastly, to all Zambians; respect and support your Zambian pastors because “ubufumu bucindika abene”.
