GOVERNMENT has approved the release of K400,000 from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for the establishment of a community radio station in Sinjembela Constituency in Western Province.

UPND Sinjembela Member of Parliament (MP) Poniso Njeula, said yesterday that the funds would go towards the establishment of Kuandu Community Radio station.

The name of the radio station is drawn from the Kuandu River which separates Zambia from Angola.

“The Ministry of Local Government and Housing last week, on Friday, gave us a go-ahead to use K400,000 towards the establishment of Kuandu Community Radio in Sinjembela constituency” Mr Njeulu said.

Mr Njeulu, who is Information and Broadcasting Services deputy Minister, said the community radio station was important in the dissemination of information among the local and rural people.

He appealed to all MPs, especially those from Western Province to consider releasing part of the CDF for the establishment of community radio stations in their constituencies.

Meanwhile, Mr Njeulu has said the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) had given vulnerable, but viable farmers in his constituency 400×10 kilogrammes bags of maize seeds.

Mr Njeulu said that the seeds would be shared between the people of Sioma and Shangombo, who are unable to buy seeds as they do not have the capacity.

He said that the seeds, which were dispatched for Sinjembela last week, were currently being distributed among the eligible farmers.

Mr Njeulu thanked the DMMU for the gesture, saying it would go a long way in alleviating poverty in the two districts.
