COPSBy SYLVIA MWEETWA-
POLICE in Mkushi on Saturday night impounded a truck laden with more than 100 logs of the Mukula tree and in the process arrested three suspects.
The three were apprehended in Mboroma area following a tip from members of the public leading to a search of a Volvo truck registration number ABZ 2582 around 22:00 hours where 130 logs were found.
Central Province Police chief Standwell Lungu said the three suspects, all of Lusaka, had been charged with unlawful possession of biological resources.
Mr Lungu identified those arrested as Joshua Moonga, aged 35, Steven Mwaanga, 40, Sailas Shikolona, 21, and 40-year David Ng’ambi. They will appear in court soon.
“I can confirm that alert police officers were patrolling the area but they also received a tip from the public leading to the arrest of three people and recovery of 130 logs of the famous Mukula tree,” Mr Lungu said.
He warned that police would continue to be on the lookout for any trucks that could be carrying logs or people, considering that the area was going to the polls in two weeks’ time.
