GOVERNMENT has officially handed over 40 houses valued at K12. 9 million to Lumbo Villagers in Senior Chief Sekute’s area of Kazungula District in Southern Province who were relocated to pave way for
the construction of a road and Bridge at Kazungula Border across the Zambezi River.
A newly constructed community school valued at K3.2 million as well as other amenities valued at K4.9 million have also be handed over to Lumbo villagers.
Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Minister Yamfwa Mukanga officially handed over the houses yesterday at a colourful ceremony attended by officials from both Zambia and Botswana.
Kazungula Bridge project is a joint venture that will be implemented between the governments of Botswana and Zambia across the Zambezi River.
The Kazungula Bridge project will be financed by Zambia and Botswana with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Speaking during the handover ceremony yesterday, Mr Mukanga said the Kazungula Bridge project was expected to increase economic activity in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Mr Mukanga said President Michael Sata was working hard daily to improve the lives of citizens and urged the beneficiaries of 40 houses to jealously guard them.
“Today is a joyous day as it marks our first important step towards the realisation of the Kazungula Bridge project.
