CHIFUBU Member of Parliament Susan Kawandami has appealed to the Ndola City Council (NCC) to award more contracts to women.
Ms Kawandami, who is Deputy Minister for Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, said this when she visited various projects undertaken from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
She said women were equal to the task of doing proper contractual jobs.
She was happy that a woman contractor who was tasked to construct a 1×3 classroom block had done a good job on the project where about K100,000 from the CDF was spent.
“It makes me proud as a woman to see a fellow woman do such good work, it shows that women can do better than men because women are efficient, clean and keep to their promise,” Ms Kawandami said.
She appealed to NCC to give more projects to Nukustar Limited, a construction company headed by a female contractor.
Ms Kawandami visited Misundu and Kaniki primary schools, Pamodzi Market, Pamodzi Police Station, Soweto and Misaka health centres.
Ms Kawandami, however, said she was disappointed with works at Kaniki Primary School and Kanyanje hammer mill.
She said she was disappointed that the construction of ablution blocks at Kaniki Primary School which started in 2009 was still not complete.
Ms Kawandami was also disappointed that the Kanyanje hammer mill which was bought with CDF was not working efficiently.
She said when the Patriotic Front Government promised people of more money in their pockets, it meant empowering them using initiatives like the hammer mill and not depending solely on Government handouts.
However, with the hammer mill not operating, it meant people expected to benefit from the project did not have ‘more money in their pockets’.
She said the Padmozi Market and Police post are to be completed before the end of the year to ensure clean trading and security to the people in the area.
