LUSAKA Mayor Mulenga Sata has urged Heriot Properties Limited, the developer of Cosmopolitan Shopping Mall, to give priority to Zambians in the 1, 500 permanent and temporal jobs that will be created during and after the construction of the US$60 million infrastructure in Lusaka.
Mr Sata made the appeal during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Cosmopolitan Shopping Mall in Lusaka yesterday.
The construction of the Mall on Kafue Road by Thor Development Properties is expected to create 1000 temporal and 500 permanent jobs.
Mr Sata was happy that construction of the infrastructure would create employment as job creation was the Government’s priority.
Mr Sata observed that Lusaka and Zambia in general had seen unprecedented infrastructure development since the PF Government took over the running of the country in 2011.
He said it was a known fact that since 2011, Lusaka and the country as a whole had seen a number of roads, schools and hospitals being constructed at “rapid speed” with zeal that had not been seen before, adding that the coming of the mall was another historic development.
Mr Sata said development of such malls in tounships would not only help to service the surrounding community but that it would also help to decongest the Central Business District and thus construction of the shopping mall in that location (Chawama Constituency) was welcome as it was in line with the principles the Lusaka City Council was propagating.
Heriot Properties Limited director Steven Herring said construction of the Cosmopolitan Shopping Mall in question was the third one in Zambia and that it will be opened in November, 2015.
He said Cosmopolitan Shopping Mall would house Shoprite, Edgars, Game Stores, Pep, Mr Price, various banks, among others and that shoppers would be protected against rain, sunshine and wind as it would be covered.
Kabwe Central Member of Parliament James Kapyanga implored Mr Herring to ensure that a similar mall was built in Kabwe.
