By MOSES CHIMFWEMBE –
VETERAN Chipolopolo defender Joseph Musonda has called for calm among soccer fans ahead of the upcoming Morocco 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Chipolopolo, who are yet to win a game in the first round of qualifiers after recording a goalless draw at home against Mozambique before suffering a 2-1 loss in Cape Verde, have only collected a point out of possible six and face Niger on October 11 in Niamey.
But Musonda said in an interview recently that the Chipolopolo were strongly in contention and should not be written off in the contest.
Musonda said there was need for the fans to be patient with the squad in the remaining qualifying matches.
“We understand how frustrated the fans have been because of the team’s poor form but I must say that we have a lot of chances to qualify. We still have four games to play and I am sure we will rise to the occasion and get the points that we need to take us to Morocco next year,” Musonda said.
Musonda, who had been part of the squad but is yet to feature in any of the qualifying games, has also urged young players in the team to rise to the challenge.
He said discipline was important if the young players in the squad were to reach greater heights and deliver positive results for the country.
The 2012 AFCON winning defender also called on senior players in the squad to use their experience in providing guidance to the new entrants.
“I have played a lot of games for the country and I think for me to reach this level, it is down to discipline. I am 37 years old and I think I have few more years to go before I hang up my boots, so the young players should learn from us in order for them to succeed,” the Polokwane City defender said.
