THE Mahtani Group of Companies has honoured some freedom fighters with K50,000 each as a token of appreciation for their sacrifice to Zambia.
Senior citizens’ accounts have been set up at Finance Bank Zambia Limited, for the veterans with a deposit of K50,000 each for those who were recognised.
Group chairperson Rajan Mahtani made the announcement at a Jubilee thanksgiving dinner in Lusaka on Monday night.
Among the beneficiaries was Dr Kenneth Kaunda, whose award was received by his son, Kaweche.
Others were Vernon Mwaanga , Mama Chibesa Kankasa, Dr Christine
Mulundika, Mark Chona, Martin Jangulo and Sikota Wina.
Dr Mahtani thanked God for preserving patriotism and democracy in Zambia.
He said the history of Zambia’s freedom fighters needed to be retold to every emerging generation to encourage the young and assist reinforce the country’s achievements and correct any mistakes.
The freedom fighters and veterans were living testimonies of God’s grace and mercy.
The accounts were presented by Dr Mahtani’s mother, Mohini.
Dr Mahtani also commended Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda for the good 2015 Budget and dispelled assertions that there were any differences between him and the minister.
“It is amazing how treacherous people tend to create animosity even where there is none. I respect him. Chikwanda and our bond will never
break as far as I am concerned,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the freedom fighters, veteran politician Sikota Wina thanked Dr Mahtani and his Group of Companies for recognising and honouring the freedom fighters.
He said Finance Bank had continued to develop Zambian society through sanitation and other programmes.
Mr Wina hoped that Zambia would remain a peaceful nation in years to come.
