Bayport Financial Services has presented scholarships to 50 first year University of Zambia (UNZA) Students.
Bayport executive director Martha Akapelwa said 60 per cent of the bursary awards by her organisation would go to the girl child.
She was speaking during the presentation of the scholarships to the students in Lusaka yesterday and graced by Education Minister John Phiri.
The scholarships were worth K504, 755. 08 for this academic year.
She urged the students to ensure that they succeeded and secured their future.
Dr Phiri commended Bayport for assisting the students and called for examining of the entire system of financing higher education.
Next month, Government would be announcing the major changes the ministry would make to the bursaries committee to make it more responsive to the needs of the students who needed Government support.
Dr Phiri urged the students who received the Bayport support to cherish and guard it jealously.
“Do not jeopardise it by engaging in unruly behaviour,” he said.
He appealed to the UNZA council and management to deal more firmly with cases of indiscipline.
The riotous behaviour should be stopped to allow the vast majority of students to pursue their academic journeys without disturbance.
UNZA could attract support if there was peace that allowed academic life to flourish.
