THE Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) has given Chainama Hills Golf Club the rights to host the 2014 All Africa Junior Challenge in April.
Chainama will be the second club in Zambia after Nchanga to stage the prestigious continental juniors’ event since its inception.
ZGU honorary secretary, Kelly Munsaka said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that the union decided to accord Chainama the opportunity to stage the All Africa Junior Challenge which would attract at least 16 countries.
Munsaka said ZGU responded to Chainama’s request to organise the championship and also that the union decided to give the Lusaka-based club a chance as a way of fairly distributing the 2014 major international events coming to Zambia.
Ndola Golf Club will stage the inaugural Zambia Ladies Golf Open in March with Nkana Golf Club in Kitwe hosting the Mopani Zambia Open in May while Lusaka Golf Club will take care of the Summer Zambia Open.
Nkana will again host the Africa Golf Confederation President’s Cup in October.
Munsaka said Chainama promised to help the Zambia Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) to fundraise for the staging of the tournament.
He, however, said ZGU had given Chainama some conditions to fulfil and that the union would closely be monitoring the progress.
“There is a checklist of items we want to be in place.
“Time and again, ZGU will be inspecting the progress at Chainama. We will not leave anything to chance because these events will be used to help build Zambia’s image. The way we handle these assignments will send a clear signal on Zambia’s abilities to organise even bigger sporting events,” he said.
With only about three months before the tournament comes to Zambia, the ZGU honorary secretary said the local golf authority would do things expeditiously as time management was of paramount essence to the union.
The All Africa Junior Challenge will be a 72 holes stroke play format over four days.
South Africa are the defending champions with Zimbabwe being the 2013 silver medalists while Zambia made golf history last year by minting bronze during the event staged at Le Touessrok Golf Course in Port Louis, Mauritius.
