natural foodsBy BRIAN HATYOKA in BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE –
A CULTURAL heritage expert in Zimbabwe has encouraged citizens to eat natural herbs and un-processed foods to prolong their lives.
Bulawayo’s Amakhosi Cultural Tours director Cont Mhlanga said many people were currently dying of conditions brought by poor eating habits and that it was important to eat natural foods to live longer.
Mr Mhlanga said a lot of people were emulating the Western culture of eating genetically modified and highly processed fast foods which were injurious to their bodies.
He was speaking in an interview at Bulawayo’s oddest market, Makokoba, on Monday when a delegation of tour operators and journalists toured Zimbabwe’s second largest city with a strong historical significance.
The delegates, who also visited Hwange National Park yesterday and are expected to visit Victoria Falls today, are on a tour of Zimbabwean tourism sites under the sponsorship of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).
“We need to discourage the eating a lot of genetically modified and highly processed fast foods as they are harmful to our bodies. Such foodstuffs are full of chemicals and they bring about lifestyle diseases such as cancer and stroke among others,” Mr Mhlanga said.
Natural herbs should be highly promoted as they had potential to cure various diseases.
“In the past, people were eating healthy foods but today they no longer do so. We need to embrace traditional herbs because they are safer, effective and food without side effects,” he said.
Traditional medicine was also effective to heal piles, high blood pressure, stomach pains as well as to enhance trade and sex.
Amakhosi Cultural Tours has introduced a new tourism product which involves taking tourists to a number of important historical and cultural sites around Bulawayo to market the city as a
cultural tourism destination.
At the end of Bulawayo City tours, visitors usually taken to a house in Emganwini where they are treated with special dances and warm hospitality by Nkazimulo Cultural Group to showcase the Zimbabwe culture.
