CONGRATULATORY messages have continued to pour in on Zambia’s 50th independence anniversary, which falls tomorrow.
Germany President Joachim Gauck said in his message that Zambia can look back proudly on half a century which has seen it develop into a democratic and economically-stable country.
Mr Gauck was happy with the peaceful co-existence of numerous ethnic and religious groups, as well as a tradition of democratic change of governments in Zambia.
Zambia had received particular recognition for generously welcoming refugees from neighbouring countries.
He pledged Germany’s determination to stand by Zambia in a spirit of friendship and in implementing reforms to prepare it for the future and encourage development.
“I very much hope that we will maintain and continue to strengthen our successful partnership in the future,” Mr Gauck said.
Britain has appointed Andrew Turnbull as the United Kingdom’s special representative to the 50th anniversary celebrations in Zambia.
Lord Turnbull is a former head of the Civil Service in the UK with strong links to Zambia where he worked as an economist in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Foreign Trade in 1968.
This ia according to a statement released by the British High Commission in Lusaka.
Lord Turnbull is also the Chairperson of the Zambia Orphans of AIDS UK, a charity registered in the UK to help orphans of AIDS to reach their full potential.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Deputy Minister Stephen Kampyongo has instructed the Police to ensure that Zambians have peaceful jubilee celebrations.
The Road Transport Safety Agency, (RTSA) has also urged Zambians throughout the country to celebrate independence with caution.
Mr Kampyongo directed the police to ensure that everyone participating in the jubilee should be rendering the necessary services.
He said police should be as selfless as freedom fighters by serving the country first and urged them to exhibit professionalism.
He made these remarks during the Zambia Police 50 years Golden Jubilee Celebrations in Lusaka yesterday.
Speaking at the same event, Police Inspector General, Stella Libongani urged the public to use the day to unite as opposed to bringing disorder in the country.
