A MINIMUM of 150,000 houses need to be built in Zambia annually to meet a housing deficit of 1.3 million in urban locations and 1.5 million in rural areas, the Habitat for Humanity has said.
The Habitat for Humanity has acknowledged the challenge and has since called for mobilisation and collaboration in the housing sector.
Habitat for Humanity senior vice president, Elizabeth Blake said Zambia had potential to address the housing deficit.
Ms Blake encouraged Government to advance the right for all Zambians to access decent and adequate shelter.
“The housing deficit cannot be addressed without having in place clear pro-poor policies, supported by adequate and sustainable funding for housing, water and sanitation,” she said She was impressed that the Government had increased funding towards housing, water and sanitation in the Budget from 0.7per cent in 2014 to 1.7 in 2015.
The commitment by Government to move towards the 15per cent allocation is essential to ensure a significant decrease in the housing deficit.
“This can be accomplished through concerted effort and commitment from Government, private sector, civil society and local communities,” she said.
