A WOMAN has been raped and brutally murdered by unknown people in Kitwe.
The woman’s body was found naked and dumped in an unfinished church building in Ndeke Changa-Changa Township.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Joyce Kasosa named the victim as Elizabeth Nyirongo, 22, of house number 1926, Ndeke.
Ms Kasosa said the victim was suspected to have been murdered between 21:00 hours on Tuesday and 09:00 hours on Wednesday when the body was found in the unfinished church building.
The body was naked, with head injuries and bruises on the back.
“She is suspected to have been raped by the assailants before they dumped her body,” Ms Kasosa said.
The body was taken to Kitwe Central Hospital mortuary for postmortem and police have launched investigations.
In another incident, Ms Kasosa said a 22-year-old man died in Chingola when a tunnel caved in on him and two others while they were conducting illegal mining in a disused mine.
The accident happened on Wednesday around 17:00 hours at one of the disused mine pits.
Ms Kasosa identified the deceased as Daniel Kunda of Soweto Township in Chingola.
“The three where initially rescued after being trapped but while being taken to hospital, Daniel Kunda died of head injuries,” Ms Kasosa said.
Meanwhile, a one-year-eight-month-old child has died in Lufwanyama after it was accidently run over by a vehicle which was being pushed.
The accident happened on Wednesday around 16:00 hours within Kafubu depot area.
