HERITAGE Party (HP) leader Godfrey Miyanda has announced that he will contest the January 20, 2015 presidential election.
Christian Democratic Party leader Dan Pule has also declared his candidacy for the election.
Other opposition parties that have so far announced their participation in the presidential poll are former president Rupiah Banda of the MMD, UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema, UNIP’s Tilyenji Kaunda, FDD’s Edith Nawakwi, FDA’s Ludwig Sondashi and NAREP’s Elias Chipimo Jnr.
National Movement for Progress president Ng’andu Magande, ADD’s Charles Milupi and Zambians for Empowerment and Development party president Fred Mutesa have not yet declared their interest to contest for the January 2015 presidency for Plot One.
Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Brigadier-General Miyanda said his party had endorsed him as its presidential candidate and pledged to provide continuity and unity as a servant of the people once he was elected.
Gen Miyanda assured the nation that he would not stop the projects he considered good which the Patriotic Front (PF) had started and that all the programmes initiated by the ruling party were in the 2001 Heritage Party manifesto, making it easier for him to adapt.
“I do not claim to be the best or even the most experienced person but I believe my tour of duty in Government, as a former Republican vice-president and minister of Education, has prepared me well for high office that I now seek,” he said.
Gen Miyanda said that Zambia was not short of leadership and thus no presidential contestant must be claiming to be the best as there were many citizens to choose from, adding that God’s plan was for the family to be the foundation and fulcrum of human race to provide continuity.
“I thus offer myself as a servant and formally announce my application to the people of Zambia to consider me for this demanding responsibility. I believe that I am suited for the transition which occurred as a result of the passing on of our President and I believe I shall provide continuity and unity,” he said.
Gen Miyanda believed that he would be a “good transition manager” as he had been consistent in campaigning against violence.
He said he was still energetic, disciplined, faithful and loyal to the Zambian people and the country as a whole.
