UNZA 628 x 350By REBECCA MUSHOTA –
THE University of Zambia (UNZA) has lately recorded better results from female students in male dominated fields.
Acting deputy Vice-Chancellor Bezerk Phiri said when he officiated at an awards ceremony at MTN head-office yesterday at which two students in the engineering school were awarded that female students were performing just as good as male students at UNZA even in male dominated schools.
“Over the years, we have witnessed the war for the top grades as I may call it, shift from being a boys only warfare to a battle between boys and the girls. Across the nine schools at the university, our ladies are performing just as well and in notable number of cases, better than our men,” Professor Phiri said.
This was because institutions like MTN were motivating the female students with sponsorship and funds for their education.
Prof Phiri said it was impossible for UNZA to sponsor all the 24,840 students at the institution.
It only sponsors 30 per cent of the students and the corporate sector should get on board and sponsor some more students.
The success of promoting women to ascend to corporate leadership positions, Prof Phiri said, depended much on how much incentives were placed before women to help them attain outstanding results.
MTN general manager corporate services Mwenzi Mulenga said the company had started the award system to encourage women to take up studies in engineering.
