Farmer nabbed over cannabis

DEC logoThe Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in North-Western Province has arrested a 37-year-old peasant farmer of Zambezi for cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing more than 700 kilogrammes.
In a statement in Lusaka yesterday, DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo identified the farmer as Anthony Mundanya.
Meanwhile Ms Katongo has disclosed that the Commission in Central Province has arrested John Mwewa, 37, a peasant farmer of Katelemuna village in Kapiri Mposhi for trafficking in 11.63 kilogrammes of loose cannabis.
Others arrested are Shampati Mwene, 33, a peasant farmer of Mwaba village in Itezhi-Tezhi District who was found with 6.1 kilogrammes of loose cannabis.
Ms Katongo said DEC has also arrested Nyambe Muyambangu, 72, a fisherman of Chibolya Township in Itezhi-Tezhi District for trafficking in cannabis weighing 5.3 kilogrammes and Maybin Kaulu, 29, of Chibwe Village in Munkonchi District for trafficking in 4.7 kilogrammes of cannabis.
And in Chingola on the Copperbelt, Ms. Katongo said the commission has arrested Peter Makungu, 29, a business executive of House No. 10 Bwikalo Street in Soweto township for trafficking in 5.7 kilogrammes of cannabis.
DEC has also arrested Aaron Swelwa, 25, a business executive of A1 Kamusongola Street in Kapisha area for trafficking in 1.4 kilogrammes of cannabis.
All suspects will appear in court soon. – ZANIS
