UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has pledged to reduce the cost of farming inputs such as fertiliser and seed once elected as Republican president.

Mr Hichilema has also reiterated that he will pay farmers that are still owed by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) after delivering their crop if elected in the next month’s presidential elections.

Mr Hichilema who is in Eastern Province said he would also reduce the cost of inputs such as fertiliser and seed, and invest in agriculture for improved productivity and diversification.

The UPND president noted that agriculture was essential for unlocking Zambia’s potential, adding that the government should stick to the promises it makes to farmers.

“Despite the considerable potential for agriculture, the percentage of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) spent on it has reduced from 7.2 per cent to 5.8 percent between 2008 and 2013, while government salaries have only increased.

Mr Hichilema’s campaign team was joined in Eastern Province by former Justice Sabastian Zulu, MMD Mkaika MP Peter Phiri, his counterparts for Sinda Levy Ngoma, as well as MMD provincial chairperson Alexander Miti.

Mr Miti said all the structures of the former ruling party were currently campaigning for the UPND.

Mr Miti called on UPND officials to ensure that MMD members that were supporting Mr Hichilema were not treated like orphans.
