Letters to the Editor -LogoPollution is one of the major causes of Environmental degradation in Zambia and Kabwe town is one of the top 10 most polluted towns in the world.
However, very little is being done in Kabwe to mitigate the effects of lead poisoning left by the closed Mines.
The recent revelation of secret documents about the Kabwe Mine deaths published in the February edition of the Bulletin and Record magazine, cannot pass without comments.
Lead poisoning is killing many residents of Kabwe silently. The high levels of lead need to be reduced. This reguires well organised environmental programmes. What is the Zambia Environment Management Agency(ZEMA) doing to mitigate the impact of lead poisoning in Kabwe?
Being on the top 10 most polluted towns in the world is not a joke. May we have serious programmes by ZEMA to fight lead poisoning in Kabwe.

Prison congestion alarming

It appears that prison congestion levels have reached alarming proportions and this is a recipe for disaster.
The Prisons Command have expressed worry at the huge influx of inmates as expressed by the Prisons Commander Percy Chato. This has been further echoed by the Kitwe High Court Judge Isaac Kamwendo.
The question is, who is to blame? Is it the courts or the offenders or indeed the Prison authorities themselves?
If this were a hospital set up complaining about an increase in patients, I would probably suggest that more be done to maximise quality health care at homes or referral centres before hospitals become congested.
Or better still, regular checkups to avoid admission or perhaps home care as a measure of last resort.
Prison congestion is a paradox. Especially that we are all potential prisoners, regardless of one’s standing in society.
Perhaps it’s time that legislation was passed to lessen custodial sentences and substitute them with community service more especially for lesser offences.
House arrests are another option for certain offences.
These people being piled up in prisons are susceptible to various sicknesses and diseases. We need an emphatic approach to this problem.

Nkombo should walk his talk

Kindly allow me to express myself over the statement made by Hon. Garry Nkombo over the outcome of the January 20 Presidential by-election.
May I take this opportunity to congratulate the Patriotic Front (PF) presidential candidate Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu for scooping the seat in the just ended election.
In one of the private print media Hon. Nkombo allegedly said if PF candidate Mr Lungu wins then he would resign from his position as Member of Parliament (MP) for Mazabuka Central.
Hon. Nkombo should live by his words if people are to respect him. Integrity should be upheld at all times, what we promise the electorate that is what we are supposed to exhibit once we occupy those offices as MPs.
Hon. Nkombo can express his opinion in any way possible however, he has an obligation to discharge his duties diligently.
Zambia is a democratic country rooted by the re-introduction of the multi-party in 1991 and fought by the MMD which should benefit all loving Zambians by the way of contributing to the development of this country.
I challenge the MP to live by his words. Let us not cheat people who voted wisely for those in public offices.
Let Hon. Nkombo come out in the open and fulfil what he said.

Mr President reduce retirement age

Please, can President Lungu reverse the retirement age for public workers, as promised? Those of us who should have retired (at the) end of 2014 are demotivated.
