PARLIAMENT will resume sitting today with key changes in the sitting pattern following the January 20, 2015 Presidential election which led to the election of Edgar Lungu as Republican President.
Lusaka Central Member of Parliament (MP) Guy Scott will sit at the back bench with Nalolo MP, Inonge Wina taking up his position as leader of Government business after her appointment as Republican vice-president.
The House will also welcome two nominated MPs, Mulenga Sata and Margaret Mwanakatwe, who have been appointed as State House deputy minister and Commerce minister respectively.
Two MMD MPs Michael Kaingu of Mwandi and Vincent Mwale of Chipaganli constituencies will move from the opposition side to the front bench following their appointment as full Cabinet ministers in the ministries of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education and Youths and Sports respectively.
MMD Senga Hill MP Kapembwa Simbao and his counterpart of Masaiti constituency Michael Katambo will be missing in the House following the nullification of their elections by the Supreme Court recently.
Former Southern Province minister Daniel Munkombwe would also be missing in the House following the revocation of his appointment by President Lungu.
The House will in this sitting deliberate on a number of private members’ Bills, Public motions and a number of reports.
Government is also expected to be issuing ministerial statements every week as directed by President Lungu to inform the nation on the developments in various ministries.
The House adjourned sine die last year on December 19, 2014 after approving the K46.7 billion national budget for 2015.
The MPs sat for 43 days after which then acting leader of Government Business Yamfwa Mukanga moved the motion of adjournment.
The last session was temporary suspended for two weeks following the death of then Republican President Michael Sata in London on October 28, 2014.
During the same period the House approved eight Bills, which include the Mines and Minerals Development, the Zambia Revenue Authority, the Customs and Exercise and the Income Tax Bills.
The House also deliberated on the Private members’ motion which included the formulation of the policy on heritage sites, lifting of wage freeze, repossession of illegally acquired land and the stiffening of laws on stock theft.
On the public motions the House deliberated on the approval of transfer of portfolio and statutory functions, death of Mr Sata and motion of supply.
The House also debated on several reports which include report on the management of wildlife in Zambia, the deployment of teachers in basic school and the degradation caused by mining activities.
