Agro body tips farmers

FARMERS in the country should concentrate on the production of commodities that have a ready market to ensure they quickly sell their produce.
Smallholder Agribusiness Promotion Programme (SAPP) Programme manager Kwibisa Liywalii said farming is a business and smallholder farmers should target their produce at readily available markets.
SAPP is a programme under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, which works at empowering farmers that need assistance in improving their market linkage, diversification, processing and value addition.
He said in Kabwe yesterday that ultimately, SAPP wanted to see increased income and food security for the farmers in the country.?Mr Liywalii also said the programme was also trying to see how nutrition could be mainstreamed within the households the programme was supporting and working with.
He said this during a workshop for Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock staff held at Tuskers Hotel.
At the same occasion, Central Province agricultural coordinator Adreen Nansungwe said the Government would continue to empowering smallholder farmers with matching grants in a bid to improve their enterprises.?She said in her speech that the Government was providing matching grants through the SAPP.
Ms Nansungwe said the matching grants were the main avenue SAPP delivered investments to support value chain to improve performance of the targeted areas.?She said in Central Province, SAPP was operating in Mumbwa, Itezhi-Tezhi and Serenje.-NAIS.
