Scales of Justice - bigBy SYLVIA MWEETWA –
A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD Serenje youth who threatened to hit his mother with a hoe over food, has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment with hard labour.
Kabwe High Court Judge Elita Mwikisa said the court would have increased the sentence to five years to send a warning to would be offenders who are in the habit of disrespecting parents or women, if it was not for his plea.
Richard Sinjela was charged with threatening violence and his case was referred to the High Court for the confirmation of the 20 months sentence slapped on him by the Serenje Magistrate court.
Ms Justice Mwikisa said it was saddening that Sinjela caused pain and trauma to his own mother by threatening to hit her with a hoe, forcing her to seek refuge at the neighbours house, as well as in the bush.
“Looking at the facts of the case, I am saddened at your behaviour because you caused so much pain to your own mother who gave birth to you, if you are bored why not find something to do?” she asked.
She said that the court was ready to increase the sentence but following mitigation from his lawyer, she decided to confirm the 20 months sentence.
The convict on the  fateful night is alleged to have gone home drunk and was not happy with the food which was left for him which he threw on the  ground before tearing his  shirt and picked a hoe threatening to hack his mother who had to run for her life.
