By KALUMIANA KALUMIANA –
FORMER Zambian league champions, Nkana begin their first full season under Beston Chambeshi after a painful 2014.
The record twelve-time league champions had one of their darkest seasons to date in 2014 when they lost coach Masauso Mwale in a car accident in May after he steered the Kitwe giants the league title in 2013 and later to their debut continental mini-league qualification in the 2015 Confederation Cup.
It didn’t end there for Nkana as they subsequently relinquished the league crown under Chambeshi but he helped them stabilise to finish fourth following his appointment at the end of July.
Nkana then started 2015 by surrendering their Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield after losing on post-match penalties to eventual winners Zesco United in the semi-finals.
It also marked the start of life without talismanic striker Ronald ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba after four years with the club where he was top scorer from 2012 to 2014 before joining Egyptian club Wadi Degla this year on a two-and-half-year deal.
However, a new look Nkana has not just rolled over and died but gave Zesco a run for their money to show a sign of things to come this season.
Striker Josphat Kasusu is so far living up to his live-wire billing in the 2015 pre-season and had a splendid performance after coming from the bench against Zesco on February 22.
Kasusu has joined Nkana on a permanent move from Kalulushi Modern Stars and he is expected to fill the huge shoes left by Kampamba.
Other new faces include striker Felix Nyaende from Power Dynamos, goalkeeper Scott Ngokane from Napsa Stars and Austin Muwowo on loan from demoted Konkola Mine Police.
Departures include defender Christopher Munthali and midfielder Kelvin Mubanga to Power Dynamos while striker Festus Mbewe has joined Red Arrows.
Expectations will be high from their fans who will be hoping Nkana, one of the country celebrated side, can rediscover the 2013 season that saw them win the league after a 12-year wait.
With ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers coming back onto the scene, it will be interesting to watch the rivalry these two sides enjoyed in the 1980/90’s.
