By SHAMAOMA MUSONDA –
CHOMA Golf Club on Sunday stunned the Zambian golfing fraternity by winning the Quadrangular National Championship which they hosted.
Going into the tournament as huge underdogs, the Choma golfers were at their best, blitzing through the course and took a huge win by a huge margin that left the three other powerhouses shell-shocked at the performance.
Choma grabbed the national title on 90 points, leaving defending champions Chilanga in distant second on 63 points, much to the amazements of the travelling teams.
Finishing third were Nkana who had a disappointing low score of 38 points and Nchanga in fourth position with just 25 points.
Chilanga were dumbfounded at losing the title they have won on the three occasions.
It was clear that Chilanga will have a tough task in Choma after scrapping into the finals from regional grueling qualifiers where they were almost beaten by Lusaka.
Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) honourary secretary Kelly Munsaka expressed happiness with the levels of competition exhibited especially by Choma.
“This shows that there is a lot of talent at these small golf clubs and it also justifies our decision to take the tournament to the Southern Province,” he said.
Munsaka said Choma thrived because they had invested a lot in the youth just as Chilanga and this was a good sign that golf was on the rise.
