THE fuss over President Edgar Lungu’s sickness is nauseating and shows the low levels of Zambian politics in terms of morality and integrity.
Here is a Third World country where some people are sadistically wishing our Head of State ill instead of debating progressive issues that would propel our country to prosperity.
We join the Government in castigating people who have made the health of President Lungu an issue that is keeping them awake.
As Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili said in a statement recently, the nation has been urging the Government in the past to be transparent concerning the health of the President.
It is in line with this concern that the current Patriotic Front (PF) administration has gone out of its way to ensure that Zambians are updated on the health of the President.
It is against this background that the minister finds the fervent inquiries about President Lungu’s health from some quarters greatly disappointing.
What do these prophets of doom really want? one would ask. Because if the Government is quiet, the same people will deafen people’s ears with demands to get updates on the health of the President.
Again if the Government updates them, this ilk will suddenly become doctors and give their own contradictory updates to the people.
These ill-intentioned hypocrites and wolves in sheep skin have left their pulpits to wear doctors’ coats suddenly becoming knowledgeable in medicine.
Their opposition counterparts have also joined them taking advantage to get at the man who beat them in the just-ended presidential election.
In short like clergymen, they have also become knowledgeable in medicine.
Like Mr Kambwili has aptly summed up this circus, the Government is usually accused of being secretive when it keeps quiet on the health of the President. Again when it issues statements on the same subject, it is accused of not saying the truth.
We wonder where the people who are making political capital out of President Lungu’s sickness were when Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda announced that the Head of State was going to South Africa for a medical check-up.
We feel the wolf pack was silently but callously relishing the information with demonic satisfaction.
When they heard good news that Mr Lungu had been discharged, the wolf pack became angry and invented its own version that one cannot be declared fit straight from the theatre.
When the late President Michael Sata (May his soul rest in peace) fell sick, the same ‘broods of vipers’ as Jesus Christ called them, wished him ill and there is information in the media to prove this.
It was sickening then to see the same hypocrites clad in black suits outdoing each other in mourning him and issuing statements of ‘condolences.’
Here they are again witnessing the resurfacing of these men of tested immorality and evil heartedness briefing us on President Lungu’s health from their pulpits and political offices.
If politics is a dirty game, then in Zambia it is a million times dirtier because of the record number of ill-bent politicians in the opposition who wish others ill for the simple reason that their opponents are in power.
Unlike other civilised societies, in Zambia being in opposition means never agreeing with your opponent, especially if he is in power. Worse still you should rejoice his suffering, sickness or even death.
The fact that he defeated you in a fair election means he is your enemy whom you should never tolerate even if he extends an olive branch to you.
If this is what democracy and multipartism means then we should hail the first Republican president Kenneth Kaunda and other nationalists for outlawing plural politics for the tribalism and personal hatred it spawned through the Choma Declaration. OPINION
