By JAMES KUNDA –
ITEZHI-TEZHI District Agriculture Officer (DACO) Peter Chiwala has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour for abuse of authority of office.
Meanwhile, Livingstone District Veterinary Officer Ernest Ndalama has been remanded in custody for abuse of authority of office involving K3,355,000.
Chiwala was convicted on two counts of abuse of authority of office.
ACC 628x350Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) public relations manager Timothy Moono, who confirmed this in a statement yesterday, said that Chiwala will serve the sentences concurrently with effect from March 24, this year.
In the first count, Chiwala on January 1, 2008 and August 1, 2008 abused the authority of his office by obtaining profit through facilitating the award of a contract to Itezhi Tezhi Construction Company Limited to construct cattle handling and holding facilities without following laid down tender procedures.
In the second count, Chiwala between May 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009 abused the authority of his office to obtain advantage by facilitating the award of a contract to the same company to construct cattle handling and holding facilities without following laid down tender procedures.
“These acts were prejudicial to the interest of the Government,” Mr Moono said.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Exonobert Zulu convicted Ndalama, 41, of Plot 4434/24B Highlands in Livingstone who was arrested by ACC on May 2, 2013.
Dr Ndalama was arrested on allegations that he abused the authority of his office by not following laid down tender procedure in the manner he purchased 350 cattle ear tags from Agro Vert Services valued at K3,355,000.
“This was an act arbitrary and prejudicial to the interest of the Government and a matter which concerned the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, a public body,” said Mr Moono.
Dr Ndalama awaits sentencing on April 2, this year.
