By JULIUS PHIRI –

GOVERNMENT has urged local authorities in the country to revive the Keep Zambia Clean Campaign.
Local Government and Housing Deputy Minister Nicholas Banda said yesterday that the local authorities such as Chipata Municipal Council must maintain cleanliness in the town as it is a gateway to neighbouring Malawi.
Mr Banda said in an interview in Chipata that the campaign was important for all the local authorities across the country in keeping their towns clean.
He said it was disheartening to note that some local authorities were failing to keep their towns clean due to the lack of proper planning and as annual budgeting.
The deputy minister said it was the responsibility of the local authorities to plan for the cleanliness of their towns.
“We need councils to make budgets and proper planning if the goal is to be realised,” he said.
He said the local authorities had the capacity to sensitise people on the dangers of keeping their surroundings untidy.
“It is always good to keep our environment clean because it is more expensive to clean up the environment when there is an outbreak of diseases such as diarrhoea,” he said.
